Question 1

How much does home EV charger installation cost?

Accepted Answer

Cost depends on the charger, the cable route and any electrical work required. Straightforward installations often fall within a common price range, but the property matters. Our cost page sets out the categories, with pricing placeholders to be confirmed for your property.

Question 2

Can any electrician install an EV charger?

Accepted Answer

The work must be carried out by an appropriately qualified, competent installer familiar with EV charging equipment and the relevant wiring regulations. EV installations have specific earthing and protection requirements that go beyond general domestic work.

Question 3

Do I need an OZEV-authorised installer?

Accepted Answer

If you are applying under a government-backed scheme, that scheme normally sets its own installer requirements. We will confirm the current position and the appointed installer’s status before any grant-related work proceeds.

Question 4

Are EV charger grants available?

Accepted Answer

Government grant schemes and eligibility rules can change. We will confirm the current position for your property and installer before any grant-related work proceeds, and you should always check the current guidance on GOV.UK.

Question 5

Can I install a charger at a rented property?

Accepted Answer

Usually only with the landlord’s written permission. Landlords are welcome to enquire directly too — we can discuss installations across single properties or small residential developments.

Question 6

Can I install a charger without a driveway?

Accepted Answer

Without off-street parking it is normally not appropriate, because a cable should not cross a public footpath. If you have an allocated or shared private space, tell us about it and we will look at what is practical.

Question 7

Does my consumer unit need upgrading?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the board’s age, condition, spare capacity and the earthing arrangements. This is assessed by the installer. Please do not open or investigate the unit yourself.

Question 8

Will the installer contact the electricity network operator?

Accepted Answer

In some cases yes. Notification to the distribution network operator can be required depending on the supply and the equipment being installed. The installer will handle this where it applies.

Question 9

What size charger can I have at home?

Accepted Answer

Most UK homes are single-phase, which commonly supports a 7kW charger. Higher-power units generally require a three-phase supply, which is uncommon in domestic properties.

Question 10

Is 7kW fast enough?

Accepted Answer

For most households, yes. Overnight charging at 7kW adds a substantial amount of range and typically suits normal daily driving patterns.

Question 11

How long will my car take to charge?

Accepted Answer

That depends on the battery size, the starting state of charge and the vehicle’s onboard charger. Your vehicle handbook gives the figures for your specific model.

Question 12

Can the cable cross a pavement?

Accepted Answer

No. Trailing a cable across a public footpath creates a trip hazard and is not an acceptable arrangement for routine home charging.

Question 13

Can I use solar panels to charge the car?

Accepted Answer

Where the charger and existing solar setup are compatible, some chargers can use available excess generation. How much is available varies with the weather and household demand.

Question 14

What is load balancing?

Accepted Answer

Load balancing lets the charger adjust its power draw according to what the rest of the house is using, so the incoming supply is not overloaded. It is a useful feature on properties with limited spare capacity.

Question 15

Should I choose tethered or untethered?

Accepted Answer

Tethered is convenient — the cable is always there. Untethered is tidier to look at, keeps the cable in the car and is more flexible if vehicles change. Both are widely used.

Question 16

Can the charger be installed on a post?

Accepted Answer

Yes, where there is no suitable wall near the parking position. A mounting post is an additional item and may involve groundwork.

Question 17

How long does installation take?

Accepted Answer

A straightforward job is commonly done within a working day. Longer routes, groundwork or electrical upgrades take longer, and we will say so beforehand.

Question 18

Will there be visible cabling?

Accepted Answer

Usually some cable is visible. A good installation keeps runs discreet — following mortar lines, downpipes or existing routes. Fully concealed cabling may be possible but often involves extra work.

Question 19

Can an existing charger be replaced?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Replacing an older or unreliable unit is a common job, and the existing supply and mounting position are checked as part of the assessment.

Question 20

Can one charger serve two cars?

Accepted Answer

One charger can charge two cars in turn, not usually at the same time. If you expect a second EV, mention it early — it can influence the charger and the cable route you choose.

Question 21

What photos help with a quote?

Accepted Answer

The closed consumer unit, the parking position, the proposed charger wall and the likely cable route between them. Please don’t open any covers to take them.

Question 22

Do you cover Exmouth, Cranbrook and Crediton?

Accepted Answer

Yes, along with Topsham, Cullompton, Tiverton and other nearby communities. Coverage depends on the installation location and contractor availability, so send your postcode and we’ll confirm.

Question 23

What happens after installation?

Accepted Answer

The installation is tested, the charger is set up with you, and you are shown how to use it, including basic app and smart-charging setup.

Question 24

Will I receive certification?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Appropriate electrical certification for the work carried out is provided on completion by the installer.
