Home charging for Exeter properties
Exeter housing varies enormously over a short distance. A Victorian terrace in Newtown or St Leonard’s presents different questions to a 1990s semi in Pinhoe or a recent build near Alphington. The charger hardware is rarely the difficult part; how the cable gets from the consumer unit to the car, and how tidy it looks when finished, usually is.
We work across the city and the communities around it — St Thomas, Heavitree, Alphington, Pinhoe, Pennsylvania, Countess Wear and out towards Topsham and Cranbrook.
What we check before installation
- Where the car actually sits when parked, and which side its charging port is on
- The position and condition of the consumer unit
- The earthing arrangement and available spare capacity
- The distance and obstacles between board and charger position
- Wall construction and whether the route can follow existing lines
- Whether any part of the route crosses ground that would need ducting
Driveways, garages and allocated parking
A driveway alongside the house is the simplest case. Detached garages, parking behind the property, or an allocated bay in a small development all work, but need more thought about cable length and where the unit is mounted. If your parking is on-street, a home charger is normally not appropriate, because a cable should not cross a public footpath.
Cable routes through or around the property
The aim is that a visitor should not notice the cabling. In practice that means following mortar lines, running behind downpipes, using existing service penetrations where sensible, or going through a garage or loft space where access allows. Some cable is usually visible; we will tell you where and roughly how much before the work starts.
Charger choice
Tethered or untethered, cable length, app and tariff integration, and whether the unit is going on a wall that faces the street. Our guide to choosing a home charger walks through the decisions, and the charger brands page compares the units people ask about most.
Installation costs in Exeter
Cost is driven by the charger, the cable run and any electrical work needed. Straightforward installations may fall within a common price range, but the property matters — see the cost guide for the full breakdown of what is included and what is quoted separately.
Exeter service coverage
We cover Exeter and nearby communities including Topsham, Cranbrook, Exmouth, Crediton, Cullompton and Tiverton. Coverage depends on the installation location and contractor availability. Enter your postcode and we’ll confirm whether we can help.
